Hi! My name is Joanie Peckels. I had a carotid dissection 22 years ago when I was 35. When I had my stroke I was totally paralyzed on my right side and I could not speak at all for 2 weeks. During that time I could not read or add 1 and 1 together. I had two little kids aged 6 and 8. I was right handed but now I’m left handed for the second half of my life! I have come a long way and now, I volunteer at PeaceHeath SW hospital as a Stroke Ambassador and I am a grandma! I have helped run the PeaceHealth Stroke and Brain Injury Group with the Stroke Coordinators there for about 14 years.

My contact info is 360-907-4457 or strokeambassador@gmail.com

Hi Stroke & Brain Injury Group!

Yesterday, while in Coeur d' Alene, ID my husband, Ken and I rode part of The Trail of Coeur d" Alene's on our bikes!  I have a recumbent trike with electric pedal assist.  We rode 51.6 miles!!!  My battery gave out 5 miles before the finish so needless to say I was pooped!  I was so grateful it was flat and that my battery didn't go out at 20 miles from the finish!  During the ride I hit 200 miles on my trike!  It was an absolutely beautiful and perfect day.  I even saw a moose!

Now we are in Lewiston, ID where Ken works at one of his plants.  So, I will be just hanging out in our hotel room while he works.  Zoom will be Tuesday at 11:00, but we'll have to cut it short though because I'm scheduled for a Zoom with Anne and Daniel at 12:00.

Here are some pictures from our adventure! I'm sorry the pictures are so small that you can hardly see my moose!  She's in the 6th one.  Enjoy!

Also, Alex is doing another study.  Here is his letter.

Dear Joanie,

My name is Alex and I’m with LaGrippe Research. I’m reaching out today because we have received a new project on the topic of Strokes. In the past, you had indicated interest in helping with future projects and we wanted to see if you would be interested in helping us spread the word about our new project?

We will be conducting 60-minute zoom interviews with adults in the United States who have experienced a stroke. We will be asking about their experiences and perspectives on physical/occupational therapy and feedback on a potential new device. Those that qualify and participate will be compensated $150 for their time.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in sharing with your group, please let me know and I will send language for sharing. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, thank you in advance for your consideration!
